My friend Aaron Kolarcik, adorably, wanted to sent some pictures of himself at school back home to his mom so she could see that he was okay and living comfortably (and not snorting coke or anything awful). I've never done a true portrait shoot before and so while this was pretty awkward it was also a lot of fun.

Picked up a Canon 420EX flash recently as a belated hanukkah present, so you can expect the photo quality to sharply drop and then improve on a marked bell curve as I figure out how it works. Keep your eyes peeled for updates as soon as I can get some alkaline batteries for this bastard.

Cambie - Main

Between Cambie and Main St. on the south side of the Cambie bridge there is a pretty big semi-industrial district full of warehouses and nondescript design companies. It looks pretty cool at night, and on walks back to my house on warm evenings from concerts at the Casa Del Artista it's a really nice place to wander through.

Critical Mass June 2008

The last friday of every month in Vancouver and many other cities around the world hosts a huge bicycle rally called Critical Mass, a sort of rolling reclamation of the roads as public space. Since June is bike month, it's always the biggest turnout for Vancouver - over 1800 bikes was the counted consensus this time. I highly encourage anyone with any kind of bike, rollerblades, unicycle, etc. etc. to participate in this enthusiastic ritual.

Fadermaster Studios in East Van recorded us for an incredible price with a really great budding engineer, Paul Boechler. Their studio is utterly gorgeous inside - although swelteringly hot. Really nice lighting. These guys have recorded some excellent local Vancouver talent and their engineer roster includes some veterans of the legendary Mushroom Studios on 4th avenue.

A community centre metalcore show in Victoria featuring local headliners Fall in Archaea and two other excellent east coast groups touring far away from home. There were a lot of other photographers at this tiny little venue, but I think I scored some pretty good shots. All the band members were really affable guys and were delighted to be photographed.

One of my best introductions to real photography was my ART 141 class this term; I owe a big debt of gratitude to Michael McLean for teaching me a lot of the history of the trade. He assigned three very interesting assignments, one of which was to produce 5 11x7" prints connected to a short playlist of songs. The inspiration behind this project for me was the fact that I am almost always wearing my iPod and listening to music that represents my mood wherever I am, and these photos were an attempt to describe the link between my surroundings and the musical atmospheres I engage in. Music to look at these photos by includes Earth, 65daysofstatic, Kinski, Crystal Castles, and Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson.

Vancouver is blessed with a huge Asian population that often keeps to themselves; the most obvious portrayals of Chinese culture are often the exploits of the caucasian population trying to showcase the "worldliness" of the city. The Richmond Night Market is a vibrant expression of the GVRD's Chinese element that plays a large part in shaping the area's cultural atmosphere.

When I started going out with my girlfriend and visiting UVic I ended up spending a lot of time on the ferries and buses just listening to music and lounging around in my own head. The coast of BC is one of the most beautiful places in the world and really cries out to be photographed.

Inspirations

There was always a bag in my dad's room, a weathered coarse leather bag full of cylinders with red velvet lining, their contents heavy but fragile, their delicate optics and light-bending glass. Photography was always a small interest of mine, but now that I own a decent camera I've been thrown into the world of prosumer cameras and marginally artful picture-taking. Maybe this blog will grow into a place to display a serious portfolio, but for now it should give you a look into the way I see the world through my camera. I'd also like to thank my friend Brendan for inspiring me to make my own blog; his new site, Brief Candle Photography, has some gorgeous modeling shots.

Over the next couple of days I'll be uploading a range of photos I've taken over the last couple of months since I started shooting with my Canon Rebel XTi and editing my shots with Apple's Aperture 2. The majority of these are taken with the XSi's 18-55mm image stabilized kit lens and some are taken with a Canon 50mm F1.4 lens. Any flash shots are done with the on-camera flash but I should soon have a 420EX for bounced light and diffusion.
